HELEN Mutfwang, wife of Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang, has visited Jos building collapse survivors to give emotional and financial support to them and their families.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Friday morning Saint Academy Jos school building collapse claimed 22 lives, with 154 severely injured.
Mutfwang, who visited the injured, recuperating at various hospitals in Jos on Wednesday, prayed for the repose of souls of death and the speedy recovery of the injured.
The governor’s wife said that the visit was to encourage the victims to pull through the difficult moment and to let them know they were not alone in the plight.
Mutfwang, who supported each of the survivors with a token, urged them to trust God for their healing.
She said that the state was committed to ensuring that such tragedies never occur again.
“The state government is taking immediate steps to review and enforce building regulations, improve safety standards and hold those responsible accountable.
“The government’s priority is to protect the lives and well-being of our citizens and we will do everything in our power to prevent future incidents,“ she said.
Mutfwang, who was at Plateau Specialist Hospital Jos, Jos University Teaching Hospital, Our Lady of Apostles, and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, commended the chief medical directors for ensuring the survivors received quality care.
NAN reports that the governor’s wife, who was accompanied by Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Caroline Dafur, and the Chairperson, Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, Mrs Olivia Dazyem, also visited families that lost their children in the collapse.
She was at the home of Mr and Mrs Tizhe Taboy, who lost a daughter, while the other was in the hospital receiving treatment.
Mutfwang was also at the family house Mr and Mrs Suleiman, who lost two children, one in SSS1 and the other in JSS2, to the incident.
Mrs Grace Ademola, a parent of a 13-year-old survivor, told the governor’s wife that her son was scared of going back to school.
Mrs Uju Orakweilu said she lost two children but, thank God, one survived, and thanked the governor’s wife for her kindness and huge support.
Mrs Nneka Okoye, a mother of three children, said only one of her children was affected and is currently recuperating.
“May the Lord bless the governor’s wife for this support; it only shows that she is compassionate and responsive,“ said Okoye. (NAN)
