NORTH East Disability Forum, a non governmental organisation, says it has provided 300 wheelchairs and artificial legs to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the region.

The Secretary of the group, Dr Adamu Ishiaku, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Wednesday.

He said the programme was being implemented with support of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.

Ishiaku also called for the rehabilitation of special schools to provide a conducive learning environment for PWDs children in the region.

“We have special schools but must of the structures are delapidated.

“We also want NEDC to appoint a desk officer for PWDs, this will bring us closer to the leadership of the commission, and our needs would be prioritised,” he said.

The secretary also lauded the commission for its empowerment programmes designed to improve social and economic wellbeing of youths and women in the region. (NAN)
