SUNSHINE Stars Youth Team of Akure on Wednesday, defeated R2 Finesse FA of Lagos 2-0 in a match-day one in the 2024/25 N-Youth League cup at the Sunshine Games Village, Akure, Ondo State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 30 teams are participating in the maiden edition of the League Cup, which has been divided into groups A and B.
Sunshine took the lead in the 24th minute through a well delivered close range free kick taken by Richard Christopher, a central defender.
The hosts took control of the game creating so many chances but the visitors were resilient in the defence, denying them the opportunity.
However, Christopher was on song again in the 44th minute when he wasted no time to score from the spot after a defender handled the ball in the 18 yard box.
In spite of all the pressure from the visitors, the hosts refused to give in, ending the match on a clean sheet and getting the maximum points.
The Head Coach of Sunshine Stars U-19 team, Olarenwaju Ale, expressed happiness over the victory.
“We dominated the game and that was what gave us the goals. We are just trying to play the way we did in training, we still have more to do in our next away game,” he said.
Sunshine Stars youth Team will play away to Gateway U-19 team in their next match in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun on Oct. 1.(NAN)
