N30bn to Governors will end up in their pockets - COSEYL warns
Featured, Politics
THE Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, the apex socio-political youth group in the South East geopolitical zone has called on President Bola Tinubu to know that N30 billion released to state governors to address hunger in their various states will never get to the poor people experiencing hunger and hardship, but it will rather end-up in the private pocket of the governors.
In a statement, the group said: “It is purely an exercise in futility to give money to state governors to address the current hunger challenges in the country.”
It added that if the federal government wants to sincerely address the present hunger and hardship, the price of fuel should be reduced to N150 per litre, the price of cooking gas should be reduced to N180 per kilo, kerosene should be N100 per litre, diesel should be N120 per litre and prices of other petroleum products should be reduced accordingly.
According to the statement, if the state governors and lawmakers had given out or used the money released to them for the benefit of the people before now by the federal government to cushion the effect of subsidy removal, the hunger and starvation would have not been this high and unbearable.
It recalled that the previous N5 billion and rice palliatives given by President Tinubu to governors did not get to the people for which it was meant for.
Unfortunately, the palliatives and money ended up in the private pocket of governors and we challenge them to show us evidence that they gave out the money to the people or show us how it was used for the benefit of the people.
“If the federal government is sincere in her determination to address the hunger and has any money or palliatives for the Nigerian people, the FG should bypass the governors, lawmakers, politicians and send the money directly into the accounts of the people for probity and accountability.
“If the FG disagrees with our suggestion, it should be rest assured that the hardship will not reduce even by 1 percent, but rather the hunger and hardship will increase astronomically as the governors and politicians will end-up using the money to drink expensive wines and other expensive luxury lives which is a total waste.
“We call on President Bola Tinubu to as a matter of urgency find a better way of dealing with the people directly and not through political office holders, who have no interest in the welfare and survival of the people,” the statement added.
