THE National Industrial Court in Ibadan has adjourned till Jan. 14, 2019 the suit instituted by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners(NUP) against the Oyo State Government over the unpaid entitlements of its members.
The NUP had filed the suit against the state government over unpaid gratuities and pension arrears totalling N42.3 billion.
When the case came up for hearing on Wednesday, Mrs Bimpe Segun-Olakojo, lead counsel for the state government informed the court that parties to the case had resorted to alternative dispute resolution.
Olakojo said the parties had been meeting to move the case out of court, adding that appreciable progress had been made.
She pleaded with the court to adjourn the case to allow negotiation to continue and ensure amicable settlement.
The claimant’s counsel, Mr Lasun Sanusi (SAN), also confirmed that negotiation was on between the parties.
Sanusi urged the court to uphold the adjournment request of the defendant’s counsel.
Justice J.J Peter consequently adjourned the case for a report of settlement.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chief Abel Afolayan and Mr Waheed Olojede, National President and Oyo State Chairman of NUP respectively had led hundreds of pensioners in solidarity to the court ’s premises.
