THE National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) said about 200 farmers would be engaged under its 2022 dry season wheat production scheme in Jigawa.
The NALDA Coordinator in the state, Malam Bello Umar, stated this at a one-day Community/Farmers Awareness Advocacy for the establishment of NALDA farms in the state on Monday in Kazaure.
Umar said that the state is endowed with arable low plains suitable for both dry and rainy seasons.
He explained that Marke village in Kaugama Local Government Area (LGA) of the state was identified for wheat production in 2021.
“Also, Gumuna-Gora sections of Gharri Irrigation Scheme in Kazaure LGA was also identified for the year 2022 dry season farming,” he said.
The coordinator said the farmers had already been trained on a free-hands land preparation (ploughing and harrowing) in preparations for the wheat production, adding that other needed inputs would soon be provided.
According to him, the agricultural inputs to be provided to the farmers include pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides, knapsack sprayers, seeds, fertilisers, water pumping machine and irrigation hose.
Others, Umar said, are harvesting machine (combine harvester) as well as the provision of credible off-takers for better and more profitable price.
“The theme for the 2020 dry season wheat production is ‘leave No One Behind’, which is an apt choice to emphasise the challenges that people around the world face in terms of food security and ending hunger.
“The world is still dealing with the aftermath of 2020 epidemic as well as the effects of global warming.
“As a result, this year’s theme is intended to serve as a rallying cry for agricultural organisations and individuals to seek and implement innovative agricultural methods in order to increase the world’s food supply and end hunger and some of the ills troubling the world,” Umar said.
Highlights of the event were presentations on wheat farming and interactive sessions with farmers, youths and women. (NAN)
