THE National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has called on Nigerians to provide compassionate support and guidance to traumatised people
Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azu, Director- General of agency made the call in Abuja on Monday at a three-day workshop on understanding linkage between Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) and trauma prevention and intervention.
Waziri-Azu explained that by building resilience, the agency empowers individuals and communities to withstand adversity to heal and thrive.
“Through understanding trauma, we can provide compassionate support and guidance to those affected, fostering a sense of hope and restoration,” she said.
Waziri-Azu represented by Mrs Ijeoma Amelio, Director, Violence Against Persons Prohibition Department, said there was need to address the health issues stemming from sexual and gender-based violence.
She said that the agency had tried to ensure comprehensive well-being and care for survivors.
“NAPTIP’s role in preventing SGBV in Nigeria involves raising awareness, providing support to survivors and holding perpetrators accountable,” she said.
Alhaji Sani Jabbi, District Head of Gagi, Sokoto State, said that there was need to empower the girl child to better their lives in any society.
Jabbi called on the society to respect gender equality which involves both men and women.
He emphasised that women empowerment is very important since it enables the women contribute in any decision making in a society.
He urged the government to invest and create awareness on trauma.
“We need to carry the traditional, religious leaders along to enable them educate their wards,” he said.
Ms Ene Ede, a Gender Activist, said that the workshop aimed at preventing, managing and promoting wellness for the purpose of encouraging personal growth and development in the communities.
Ede also said that the main objective of the workshop was to create awareness and advocate a violence-free society.
“This workshop serves as an opportunity for key participants to interact, share knowledge, and increase capacities in dealing with Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, SGBV-induced trauma-cases in their various forms,” she said.(NAN)
