NASARAWA State House of Assembly has assured the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) of its readiness to support the inclusion of its members in the special salary scale and other beneficial packages for teachers.

The Speaker of the assembly, Ibrahim Balarabe, gave the assurance on Monday in Lafia during a peaceful protest by members of the association at the assembly’s complex.

Balarabe said the gesture was aimed at promoting the cordial working relationships between academic and non-teaching staff in the places of their primary assignments for improved standard and productivity.

The members regretted their non-inclusion in the 65 years of retirement age and 40 years of service before retirement.

The speaker, represented by Daniel Ogazi, Chairman of, House Committee on Education, commended the members for their peaceful protest.

” You have shown that you are peaceful by adhering to the rules and regulations as a union.

“Your complaint is at home as you need each other, that is both academic and non-academic staff need a good working relationship for an improved standard of education.

” When that law comes to the House on the issue of the retirement age and years of service for teachers, we want to assure you that your demands will be considered, ” he said.

He urged them to continue with their peaceful agitations in the interest of development.

Earlier, Mr Paul Yusuf, the State Secretary of NASU,  said the members embarked on a three-day peaceful protest to draw the attention of both the Federal and State  Governments to the need to include members of the union in the special salary package of 65 years retirement age and 40 years of service, among other demands.

” We write to you that teachers are not only workers in the school system. The work of the teaching and non-teaching staff is indispensable as both categories of staff work in the same environment and also acquire the same basic certificates.

” They synergize to ensure the attainment of the desired goals,” Yusuf said.

He, therefore, appealed to the assembly to intervene in order to ensure that their demands were met. ( NAN)
