THE Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill that provides for financial autonomy of the Assembly to ensure effective legislation and service delivery.
Speaker Ibrahim Abdullahi announced the passage of the bill during plenary on Wednesday in Lafia after a motion by the Majority Leader, Tanko Tunga (APC-Awe North), seconded by Peter Mbucho (PDP-Akwanga North).
Abdullahi said that the purpose of the bill was to grant real financial autonomy to the state legislature.
“Sometimes ago, President Muhammadu Buhari graciously signed into law the financial autonomies of both the Legislative and Judicial arms of government of various states including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
“In view of the above development, this House saw the need to further give effect to this gesture by providing modalities for the smooth, effective and efficient implementation of the financial autonomy by drafting this bill.
“The bill has gone through all stages of legislation, hence the need for its passage to law, known as the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Financial Management Law.
“Under this law, there shall be a Fund Management Committee of the House comprising of six members, which include the Speaker as Chairman, the Majority Leader, the Minority Leader, the Chief whip, the Clerk of the House as well as the Director of Finance and Accounts as members,” he said.
The speaker further directed the clerk to the House to produce a clean copy of the bill for the governor’s assent. -NAN
