THE National Library of Nigeria, Plateau Branch, has called for more efforts at strengthening better self-esteem for the girl child.

Mrs Sarah Emmanuel, the head of the  branch, made the call on Tuesday in Jos during a mentorship and skill training programme for the orphaned girls to commemorate the Year  2022 edition of the International Day of the Girl Child.

The event, held at House of Recab, an orphanage and a home for the less privileged children in Jos, was co-hosted by ‘Dare To Be Different Reading Club’ and ‘Better Class Environment Organisation’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the International Day of the Girl Child was initiated  in 2012.

The theme for 2022 is ‘Our time is now, Our rights our future’.

Emmanuel said that  the essence of the event was to impact on the self-esteem of the girl child, particularly the vulnerable ones in the society.

“We want the girls to actually know that they can believe in themselves, let them not hide their talents under any circumstance.

“They should believe in themselves, and they should know that they have something to offer  their country,” she said.

On her part, Mrs Sandra Addi, the co-host of the event, reiterated the importance of the place of the girl-child and the need for them to have healthy mindsets, in spite, of their disadvantaged positions.

“So, for this event, we know that it is important that we pay attention to the girl child because you see when you build a woman you build the nation.

“She’s the one at the end of the day that will educate every other person, including the male child.

“So, we believe strongly and why this is very important is because the girls we’re dealing with today are actually orphans.

“They grow in this environment where they feel they’re low, they feel that their parents left them, they usually have that feeling.

“We are trying to make them feel  that someone somewhere is looking out for them, and that someone somewhere feels they are important,” she said.

One of the girl-child orphans, Mercy Isaac said that  she felt special to have been chosen as one of the participants at the event.

Also, Elizabeth Tukura, another orphan, thanked the organisers and prayed to experience similar gesture at the next year’s celebrationcelebration. (NAN)
