NATO would like to ensure the alliance’s ability to deal with any potential threat, regardless of its origin, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday.

“Today we will take further decisions to strengthen our Alliance, to ensure our collective deterrence and defence. We will adapt our Command Structure, raise the readiness of our forces, and increase their ability to reinforce rapidly, when needed.

“We will address burden-sharing and make sure that we remain ready to face any threat from any direction,’’ Stoltenberg said ahead of the meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, as quoted by the alliance’s press service.

The official added that the upcoming meeting was important in order to prepare for the NATO summit in July, as well as to ensure the security of the alliance members.

NATO has been significantly increasing its presence in Europe, particularly in its eastern and southern part, after the eruption of the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, using alleged Russian interference in the Ukrainian internal affairs as a pretext.

Moscow has repeatedly voiced its protest against the NATO military build up, saying that it would undermine regional stability and result in a new arms race. (Sputnik/NAN)
