The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists lauds President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting defeat in the March 28 presidential election as well as congratulating Buhari emerging as the president-elect

THE Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan on his sportsmanship in conceding defeat to General Muhammadu Buhari, president-elect, following the peaceful conduct of the 2015 presidential and National Assembly elections. NAWOJ also congratulated Buhari, on his victory at the polls.
The group in a statement said that the singular act of President Jonathan conceding defeat doused a lot of tension that had been building up in the country. They described the president’s action as a true lesson for democracy. “NAWOJ wishes to adjudge the 2015 election as a free and fair election in Nigeria. Although it was conducted under the watch of an incumbent-candidate, yet the processes was free and fair as even the international community and other observer groups have adjudged. We wish to heartily congratulate the president-elect for his victory in the elections and urge him and all his supporters to take this victory as a victory for all.
“We should not engage in provocative jubilation but be humble even in victory; we must all know that the office of the president is an office held to render service to all Nigerians irrespective of party, tribe, religion or ethnicity. Therefore, we urge also the supporters of President Jonathan to take it in good fate as our dear President Jonathan already has. Indeed this is a true test of democracy and our nation, Nigeria will not expect any election less than the precedence that has been set in the 2015 elections. We urge the media to be patriotic and only propagate those issues that unite our nation Nigeria and not the ones that divide us,” it stated.
NAWOJ also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for successfully conducting the election irrespective of the challenges witnessed with the card readers. It, however, commended all Nigerians as well as the security agencies for their patience throughout the electoral process.
“NAWOJ wishes to commend Prof. Oluremi Sonaiya for the giant strides she has thus far pulled in her presidential bid having polled reasonable amount of votes in comparison with her other male contemporaries apart from the candidates of the PDP and APC. NAWOJ hopes that some day in the future, the likes of Sonaiya would make it as Nigeria’s president or would have laid the solid foundation for a woman president in Nigeria.”
