MRS. Omobolanle Akingbehin, the Vice- President ‘B’ Zone of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has challenged female journalists to ensure they reflect the roles of women in all sectors of the economy they find themselves.
Akingbehin spoke with NAN in Abeokuta on Thursday when she visited Ogun on a two-day working visit.
She advised that female journalists must be at par with their male counterparts without fear or favor and ensure professionalism on the job.
She commended some of her members who had risen to managerial levels in government and political spaces, saying they deserved it for maintaining their professionalism over the years.
“Female journalists must first see themselves as professionals on the jobs. You must first appreciate why you are a journalist in the first place and you must ensure that as a female journalist you play your role in a way that reflects the angle of every woman in all sectors.
“Be it in oil and gas, be it in the banking sector, be it in the commercial or health sector. That professionalism must play out in your reportage.
“The female journalist that I am looking for is somebody who will stand in the midst of all her contemporaries and raise her head and say I am a professional journalist,” she said.
Akingbehin said that one of her objectives in NAWOJ is to ensure her zone stands out with women ruling in all aspects.
She appealed to female journalists to keep learning about the beats they cover and about what is happening around them.
“That way, you will be able to develop and play your part. That way you will be recognized when they are looking for who to occupy political or other positions of responsibilities.
“My three-year tenure will be devoted to training, retraining, and retraining until we are there.
“My visit to Ogun is a thank-you visit. After the elections, we are supposed to go to all the states. I had gone to Oyo State and I’m here now to check on my members.
“Also, I am to join them in identifying their challenges and concerns, try to collectively proffer solutions to them, and together suggest how we can move the association forward,” she added. (NAN)
