NBA lauds Makinde’s re-election victory, urges him to do more work

THE Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan branch, says Gov. Seyi Makinde’s re-election as the Governor of Oyo State, was not unexpected going by what he did well in his first term.
Its Chairperson, Mrs Folasade Aladeniyi, made the assertions on behalf of the association, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ibadan.
Aladeniyi said that the good work done by Makinde was witnessed in massive road infrastructures all over the state.
“⁶Others were prompt payment of civil and public servants’ salaries, pension payments, overhauling of public schools, primary healthcare centres and generally impacting on the welfare of the citizens of Oyo State.
“The judiciary is also a beneficiary of the state government by this administration’s effort in overhauling our court premises and infrastructure, though more can be done to actually overhaul the justice system in Oyo State.
“The Ministry of Justice, under the Governor’s watch, should be better funded with the employment of more lawyers given priority.
“The governor’s directional policy tagged: ‘Omituntun 2.0’ on sustainable developments should concentrate more on bringing economic growth to the state.
“Thank God, railways have now been moved to the Concurrent Legislative list. The state government should be able to connect the interland to the cities for easy movement of agricultural products.
“Liberalising land tenure holdings and perfecting land documents should even be more simplified; the government has tried in that aspect with the home owners Certificate of Occupancy.
“However, the second phase of that policy never really took off,” she said.
Aladeniyi said that the state was blessed with good arable land.
She urged the government to look into better policies of granting flexible loans to farmers and other agricultural implements to sustain crop production and storage, to achieve food security in the state.
Aladeniyi advised the state government to look into the environmental policy of the state, saying that Ibadan, as the capital city, “is too dirty for a modern state”.
According to her, a modern city should have parks and gardens for more beautifications.
“In addition, the state government should encourage local governments to actually carry out their constitutional roles, which will invariably lead to the entire growth of the state.
“Also, the governor should improve on publicity and enlightenment of his various projects.
“He needs to let the people know what he is doing to make life better for us in the state,” Aladeniyi said. (NAN)
