The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) has praised the organisers of the YUCATECO amateur boxing tournament, which began on Thursday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that YUCATECO is hosting the tournament in partnership with the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the African Boxing Union (ABU).
NBB of C Secretary, Remi Aboderin, told journalists that over 48 boxers from eight African countries were participating in the tournament.
Aboderin, who is also President of the West Africa Boxing Union (WABU), expressed satisfaction with the tournament’s standard, particularly the boxers’ impressive performances.
“This tournament is a significant development for amateur boxing and will undoubtedly produce top young boxers for the participating nations.
“This is a commendable initiative, and the organisers deserve praise for the level of preparation given to the boxers.
“This project will not only develop the boxers but also keep them away from negative influences that could ruin their futures,” Aboderin stated.
He noted that the tournament would enhance the boxers’ skills and improve their rankings as they transition to the professional level.
NAN reports that in the concluded bouts, Agbotomey Mahudjro of Benin lost to Nigeria’s Samuel Dahunsi in the 52kg category after a three-round unanimous decision.
Faruk Osikoya of Nigeria defeated Uganda’s Kimera Moses in three straight rounds of their 52kg bout.
Mayowa Gbadeyan of Nigeria stopped compatriot Toluwani Williams in three straight rounds of their 56kg bout.
Nigeria’s Quam Musefiu secured a unanimous decision victory over fellow Nigerian Michael Ogunremi in their 56kg contest.
Uganda’s Battle Nuhu defeated Ghana’s Daniel Awadzi with a second-round technical knockout in their 69kg clash.
Hawawu Ogunmodede of Nigeria overcame compatriot Amira Oluwatoyin in three straight rounds of their 54kg female category bout.
The tournament will end on Saturday at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. (NAN)
