THE National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has ordered all broadcasting stations in Nigeria to suspend the use of the popular microblogging platform, Twitter.
Armstrong Idachaba, director-general, NBC, on Monday gave the order in a statement, stating that television and radio stations are advised to de-install Twitter handles and “desist from using Twitter as a source (UGC) of information gathering for News and programs presentation especially Phone-in.”
The director-general order followed the federal government’s ban on Twitter activities in Nigeria.
Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture announced a ban on Twitter on Friday, June 4, after the microblogging site deleted a  post by President Muhammadu Buhari threatening to deal with youths in the southeast with violence.
Mohammed also directed the NBC to “immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.”
Some Nigerians have been using alternative means to get on Twitter prompting Abubakar Malami, attorney general to threatening that those using Twitter illegally will be prosecuted.
However, Femi Falana, SAN, and legal luminary have said that there is no law against using Twitter and no one can be sued for a nonexistent law. He also said that his firm will represent anybody the government charges to court.
