THE Bauchi State chapter of the National Council for Women Society (NCWS), says it has initiated a soft loan scheme to support women farmers to encourage agricultural activities in the state.
Ms Shafa’u Ladan, Chairperson of the council, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Bauchi.
Ladan said the facility would be provided to the farmers with support of the North-East Farmers Association, adding that modalities had been put in place to fast track implementation of the scheme.
She said the beneficiaries would be selected across the 20 local government areas of the state.
She, however, decried low participation of women in the Anchor Borrower Programme (ABP), saying that the trend was inimical to sustainable development in agricultural sector in the state.
“Enhancing access to the programme will encourage women to venture into large scale farming.
“Commercial farming is a tool for reducing unemployment and contribute towards achieving food security in the country,” she said.
According to her, the council is also providing training to women to enable them to develop their leadership skills.
She said the council was working to identify women with capacity and willingness to participate in politics and assume leadership positions in the state.
“We are also creating awareness and mentorship sessions using women development officers in all the 20 LGAs,’’ she said.
While urging its members to ensure propmt payment of dues, Ladan called for snergy between different women organisations for sustainable development in the state.
