THE National Directorate of Employment (NDE), has begun a capacity building workshop for 20 of its trainers in Plateau, as part of its Train-Of-Trainers (TOT) programme under its Vocational Skills Development (VSD) department.
Speaking at the opening of the three-day workshop on Wednesday in Jos, the Acting State Coordinator of NDE in Plateau, Mrs. Asabe Lassa, said that the initiative is designed to inculcate knowledge on the participants.
“The training is to inculcate in them knowledge that would help them improve themselves as trainers and enable them to better handle trainees,” she said.
She described the trainers as critical in imparting knowledge to trainees, on the over 200 various vocational skills training that the NDE organises for unemployed Nigerians.
She said that the trainers who are drawn from the the various vocation on hairdressing, tailoring, carpentry and phone repairs amongst others, are expected to have updated knowledge to transmit to their trainees.
She said the training which was the first for 2023, would be continuous for the trainers.
She added that trainers who are unable to transmit updated trends or knowledge in their vocations to trainees in their various programmes, would be changed to more versatile ones.
In his remarks, the Director of VSD, Mr Isah Abdul, urged participants to take the workshop seriously in order to learn new skills and stay relevant in their various vocations.
The Director, represented by an official of the department, Mr. Musa Ibrahim, described their training as crucial because they are major stakeholders in NDE, who impart knowledge on their trainees.
He said that the workshop would be interactive to help participants build their skills, which have multiplier effects on other sectors of the economy.
Abdul said that plans are ongoing for an upward review of the stipend given to trainers, saying that the action is part of efforts to motivate them to perform better.
Responding on behalf of the participants, Mr. Adam Musa thanked NDE for the training, assuring of their commitment to improve on their skills.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the participants would be trained on basic life skills; personal evaluation and capacity development; communication methods and interpersonal skills and time management. (NAN)
