NDI Anambra have applauded Anambra State government over its far sight in managing flood menace this rainy season.
“It is worthy of note that flood disasters have been less compared to previous years,’’ Michael Okonkwo, the commissioner for Environment, has observed.
The commissioner made the observation in Awka following report reaching him, acknowledging that Ndi Anambra have heaved a sigh of relief that this year’s rainy season had been devoid of the usual flooding.
“We owe this great achievement to Governor Willie Obiano’s directive that insisted that all drainages in Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi be de-silted so that rain water can follow their channels, since flooding becomes destructive when it cannot find its cause,” Okonkwo said.
Okonkwo expressed satisfaction that government’s effort had yielded tremendous results, as citizenry had been full of appreciation that they could go home and sleep peacefully without fear of flooding.
“The dreaded Obunagu Road by Sammy Sparkle had been rectified to some extent, pending final resolution from the House Committee on Environment over a controversial building on the channel, which had adversely affected natural flow of water,’’ he said.
The commissioner reiterated that the state government would not relent in ensuring that the people and their environment would be safe.
He, however, urged Ndi Anambra to help to sustain government’s efforts by changing attitudes toward the environment, by clearing the gutters of debris.
Okonkwo pleaded with the citizenry to desist from blocking existing flood channels, for safety of all.
