THE Nery Developmental Initiative, NDI, has called for urgent and collective action to combat drug abuse in Nigeria following the alarming revelation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, that about 14 million Nigerians are addicted to harmful substances.
Reacting to the disclosure by NDLEA’s Deputy Commander, Ondo State Command, Yetunde Joyifous, NDI expressed deep concern over the rising number of young people falling victim to drug abuse, particularly secondary school students, who are most vulnerable.
The organization stressed the need for community-based rehabilitation centres to support addicts seeking recovery. It also called for the introduction of structured drug prevention programmes in schools to educate students on the dangers of substance abuse.
NDI further advocated for vocational and skill acquisition programs to provide young people with alternative means of livelihood, discouraging their involvement in drug use and trafficking. Strengthening law enforcement efforts to track and shut down drug supply chains was also highlighted as a crucial step in tackling the crisis.
Parental and community engagement, according to NDI, remains essential in addressing the problem, as families and local leaders must play a more active role in monitoring and mentoring the youth.
Reaffirming its commitment to the fight against drug abuse, NDI pledged to collaborate with relevant agencies and community-based organizations to safeguard the future of Nigerian youths.
