THE North East Development Commission (NEDC), has secured employment for 60 youths it sponsored for training as electrical technicians and linesmen.

Mr Mohammed Alkali, the  Managing Director of the commission, disclosed this at a  graduation ceremony for the youths on Saturday in Maiduguri.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the trained youths were  presented with their employment letters at the event by the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC).

YEDC is responsible for supplying electricity to Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and Taraba States.

Alkali said the youths, drawn from the six north-east states were beneficiaries of a Memorandum of Understanding signed  between the commission and the Mainstream Energy Solution Ltd, who acquired the YEDC.

The managing director, who reiterated the commitment of NEDC to its mandates including empowerment of youths and provision of jobs,  enjoined  them to continue to avail themselves to opportunities in various fields provided by the commission.

In his speech, Executive Director, Corporate Sevices of the Mainstream Ltd, Mr Usman Mohammed, said the company would continue to collaborate with NEDC for more opportunities for the people of the North-East.

“By working hand in hand with the North East Development Commission, there are boundless opportunities for collaboration that will not only benefit our organisations, but more importantly, the people of the region.

“Some of these benefits include, but not limited to, increased stability, economic growth, Infrastructure development, job creation and socio-economic integration.

“Let us use this occasion as a catalyst for renewed commitment and collaboration towards the advancement of our zone,” he  said.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of YEDC, Malam Abdulrahman Isa, said the development would go a long way in tackling the manpower challenge facing the company.

Isa tasked the youths on integrity, hardwork and commitment to duty, stressing  that the company had zero tolerance for corruption and extortion.

Some of the youths, who spoke at the event, including Mohammed Yerima from Borno, Ali Modu from Yobe and Habibu Kassim from Bauchi, thanked the  Federal Government for establishing the commission and lauded the positive roles it was playing in the region.

They promised to make maximum use of the opportunity given them to build themselves, families and the society in general.

NAN also reports that the commission used the occasion to present a new bus to Arabic Language Village, Ngala, and a Hilux van to North-East Governors’ Forum secretariat  (NAN)
