THE National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has commenced the distribution of agro-chemicals and their dispensers to 2018 flood-affected farmers in Achalla area of Anambra State.

Bolanle Ojo, NEMA Team Leader said at Achalla Distribution Centre in  Awka North Local Government Area, LGA, that the intervention was to assist the affected farmers to boost their yield.

The victims were from seven LGAs — Anambra East, Anambra West, Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Awka North, Orumba North and Ihiala.

Ojo noted that the gesture was the third phase of the Federal Government support to 4,636 farmers and 7,251.72 hectares of farmlands affected by flooding in the state.

The first phase was the verification of affected farmers, the second, distribution of seedlings and now the third, the support with necessary agro-chemicals to ensure they have good yield.

Some of the chemicals distributed are Rakcha, Vinash, Sarozeb, Perfect killer, Sharp shooter and 16 litres of sprayer; some of the chemicals are used to control worms.

Ojo said that Federal Government engaged a group of consultants to organise training to the Agric Extension workers in all the flood-affected LGAs that would also train farmers on natural ways of treating their crops against pests, and other insects.

Ogbaru Transition Committee Chairman, Arinze Awogu, commended state and the Federal Government for their good gesture, noting that it was an indication that they love farmers and Nigerians.

A cassava and yam farmer from Ogbaru, Chukwuma Idoma, said that the items would help them to recover from their losses.

A rice and maize farmer, Theresa Ofoedu, from Awka North LGA thanked the state and Federal Governments, saying that she could not have afforded the items because she was a poor widow.
