THE Nigeria Electronic Media Content Exhibition and Awards (NEMCEA), on Wednesday honoured Goge Africa and other content creators at its maiden  exhibition and awards.

The awards organised by Electronic Media Content Owners Association of Nigeria (EMCOAN) in partnership with Broadcast Media Africa was to reward excellence in content creation.

Speaking on the idea behind the event, EMCOAN President, Mrs Jibe Ologeh, said that Nigeria despite having the second largest movie industry usually struggles to take its culture out of the country to exhibit.

“Aside Hollywood, we are number two. We spend to go out of the country to exhibit our culture,  where they now decide on it, meanwhile, we own 70 per cent of the content.

“We organised NEMCEA to exhibit our content here instead of taking it outside the country so people can come from different cultures to see what we have,” she said.

Ologeh also commended the regulation of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) which stipulates 70 per cent  of local content in broadcasting.

She said the regulation had come to stay as it would make anyone in the country feel like they are truly in Nigeria whenever they switch on their televisions and radios.

Ologeh said EMCOAN latched on the regulations to put up the maiden edition of NEMCEA.

The Chairman of the jury, Mr Francis Onwochei, said the maiden edition received so many entries before he and other members of the jury published 44 nominations in different categories.

Onwochei said creatives around the world enjoy the spotlight when their works get nominated or win awards as reward systems are testimonials to hard work.

He congratulated the nominees and the winners, adding that a nomination is as good as a win in any award contest.

“This energises the recipients to do more. It is as well a much needed impetus for the expansion of the creative space,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Goge Africa won the award for ‘Outstanding Tourism and Culture Programme on the TV’ in a special recognition category.
