FOLLOWING the challenges faced by several African internet service providers due to submarine cable cuts, the Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC has assured that cable operators are actively involved in restoring connectivity.

The commission in a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, NCC on Thursday explained that various operators, including West African Cable System, African Coast to Europe, SAT3, and MainOne, encountered outages.

According to him, the disruptions were linked to incidents in Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, leading to subsequent disruptions in Portugal.

The NCC also pointed out similar challenges experienced by other undersea cable routes like Seacom, Europe India Gateway, and Asia-Africa-Europe 1.

Regarding this, the regulator mentioned, “Undersea cables providing traffic from Europe to the East Coast of Africa, such as Seacom, Europe India Gateway, and Asia-Africa-Europe 1, have been affected by cuts around the Red Sea area, resulting in service degradation along these routes.”On social media platforms, many subscribers expressed frustration on Thursday, citing difficulties making phone calls and accessing online services.

Despite these obstacles, the NCC reassured the public that cable operators are actively working on repairs, with services gradually being reinstated. The commission stated, “Operators are already undertaking repair efforts, with services being incrementally restored. They are committed to working tirelessly to ensure services are back to normal in the affected regions as soon as possible.”

It is crucial to disseminate this information to corporations and consumers reliant on these services.MTN Nigeria, the leading telecommunications provider in the country, acknowledged the situation and reassured its subscribers of ongoing efforts to resolve the issue swiftly.

A similar incident occurred recently where major operators in the country – including MTN, Airtel, and 9mobile – encountered a widespread network connection crisis. The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo, informed NewsNow that the connectivity issue stemmed from significant fibre cuts by road contractors working for the Federal Government.

As explained by the ALTON chairman, “There have been notable fibre cuts throughout the country, impacting connectivity. Telecom operators affected are working to address the situation.”
