Two serving members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) have been shot dead in Bayelsa by unknown gunmen.

According to a resident of Yenagoa, the state capital, the deceased were killed in Swali community in the town, on Wednesday night.

They were immediately taken to Federal Medical Center (FMC), Yenagoa, where one was pronounced dead on arrival while the other died while receiving treatment.

A police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told TheCable that they were shot at a primary school in Swali.

The identities of the corps members had not been ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

A pupil of the school where the deceased were teaching was also shot but details are sketchy.

Although details are still sketchy, some reports say the killers are cultists.

Prior to the 2019 general elections, a coalition of civil society groups raised the alarm over looming violence in the state.

The groups, made up of the Coalition Against Electoral Violence, Save Bayelsa and Save Niger Delta Group, asked at a press conference in Lagos that necessary steps should be taken by the Federal Government and various authorities to avert the violence.

The convener of the coalition, Olufemi Lawson, said it was focusing on Bayelsa State because of the widespread violence that occurred during the 2015/2016 governorship election in which several persons were allegedly killed and injured.

After the presidential and National Assembly elections, Governor Seriake Dickson constituted the judicial commission of inquiry on electoral violence that characterised the presidential and National Assembly elections in parts of the state.

The chairman of the commission is Justice Inieakadi Eradiri, while Dr. Richard Ogbe serves as the Secretary.

Mrs. Felicia Olisah, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, is a member.

Other members are Churchere Komonibo, a retired Chief Superintendent of Police; and Archbishop Jacob Akpiri; while Prof. Festus Emiri is counsel to the commission.

It is still unclear whether the killing of these youth corps members is connected to the recently-concluded elections.
