Some board members of the Nigeria Football Federation say the board is ready to support the ambition of Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia State to become FIFA president, but want him to formally apply

THE Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, is eager to support the ambition of Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor Abia State to become the next FIFA president. Members of the board at the weekend, promised to give Kalu their support, but he should make a formal request endorsement from the federation.

Yusuf Fresh, a member of the technical committee of the NFF, who spoke on the merits of having a Nigerian in charge of the world football governing body, Kalu’s achievement with Enyimba International of Aba while he was governor of Abia State had shown that given higher responsibility he would perform creditably.

“He (Kalu) cannot aspire to contest without the backing of the NFF and if he seeks our support, we shall surely give him. He has countless of achievements to show from his performance as two-time Governor of Abia State. He made Enyimba what they are today because it was through his effort that Nigeria broke the CAF Champions League jinx. He won the competition twice as well as the CAF Super Cup,” Fresh said.

Expressing the same sentiment, Ahmed Mu’azu Kawu, chairman of the Nigeria Nationwide League, NNWL, said Kalu was in line to have such aspiration, but that he should go through the proper channel to actualise the ambition.

“I like the doggedness of Dr. Orji Kalu in aspiring to be the FIFA president. Of course, he’s qualified and has the record to back it up. But he has to go through the proper channel, that is seeking the clearance of the Nigeria Football Federation,” Kawu said.

But whether Kalu himself is really ready for it is yet to be seen.
