Volunteer teachers recruited by SCI and inducted by TRCN in Yobe

SAVE the Children International (SCI), a Non-Governmental Organisation and Global Affairs Canada (GAC) have recruited 178 volunteer teachers in Borno and Yobe.

Mr Mark Umaru, SCI Field Manager made this known at the induction of 94 volunteer teachers by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) on Tuesday, in Damaturu.

He said SCI through the GAC project, recruited 178 volunteer teachers and posted them to the 60 project supported schools in Borno and Yobe.

The gesture, according him, was to support quality, gender responsive and culturally sensitive teaching and learning.

He added that the organisation in collaboration with TRCN, worked to establish Teachers` Professional Development (TPD) services in the two states.

“The services will include teacher capacity building, trainings carefully designed and tailored to address identified capacity gaps among the volunteer teachers.

“In November 2021 SCI enrolled and registered 136 volunteer teachers with TRCN for Professional Qualification Examination (PQE),“he said.

He said that out of the 136 candidates, 111 passed the test and while 94 of them are being inducted and presented with certificates and licences to practice.

Mr Ilya Joseph, the SCI Education Manager, said the organisation  had  discovered that children’s education was  paramount.

He said that for learning to be effective, teachers’ quality must not be compromised.

“We have discovered that for these teachers to be recognised both nationally and at the state level, there is need for them to be registered with TRCN,“he said.

Also speaking, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, Registrar, TRCN, appealed to government to offer the volunteer teachers permanent and pensionable appointments.

Ajiboye represented by Mr Abinbola Ahmed, called on the inductees to discharge their duties professionally in line with the ethics of the profession. (NAN)
