NGO trains 60 youths on GBV in Kaduna
GENERAL
NO fewer than 60 youths in the Southern part of Kaduna State were on Saturday trained on tackling the menace of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) against women and girls in their communities.
An NGO, The Justice Development and Peace Caritas of Kafanchan Catholic Diocese (JPDC) organised the training in partnership with the Women Interfaith Council, with sponsorship from the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.
The participants were drawn from Goska and Dangoma and Zango Urban and Kurmin Masara communities, in Jema’a and Zangon Kataf Local Government Areas, respectively.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training is part of the Community Action for Peace and Socio-Economic Development (CAPSED) project being implemented by JDPC and WIC.
Another essence is to inspire men and young men to take active roles in promoting gender equality, culture of respect and challenging harmful practices.
Mrs Regina Onah, CAPSED’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, said that the aim of the training was to create awareness on the dangers of GBV.
It was also to inspire young men to take active roles in promoting gender equality as well as challenging harmful traditional practices.
Onah enlightened the participants on the need to respect women and girls, their choices and treat them with dignity and integrity.
She stated that as gender ambassadors, the participants were expected to amplify gender violations and ensure that persons who abused women and girls were severely punished.
Speaking on positive masculinity, Williams Biya, Project Manager of CAPSED, sensitised the youths on the need to attitudinal behaviours and beliefs that reinforced inequality between men and women.
Biya charged them to always advocate, promote and protect the rights of women and girls in their various communities.
One of the participants, Micah Bulus, stated that he had learnt to treat females with respect and ensure they were not discriminated against in all decisions.
Bulus thanked the organisers for the training and promised to cascade it in his community. (NAN)
