AN international NGO, Search for Common Ground, (SFCG),on Tuesday trained stakeholders on early warning and response to threats in the management of violence and conflict in the Niger Delta.

Dr Phillip Kalio, Capacity Building and Training Coordinator for the NGO, said during the training that the concepts were essential to improve the capacity of the communities to identify, analyse and report such early warnings.

”This training will also help to increase collaboration between communities, local governments, state government, civil society organisations, security, agencies, among others.

“Early warning and early response are very key in the management of violence and conflicts and the essence of early warning is early response,” he said.

He identified kidnapping, drug abuse, farmer/herder clash and community elections as major causes of conflicts and violence.

Also, Mr Kyegh Aov, Conflict Early Warning Analyst of Foundation for Partnership Initiative in the Niger Delta (PIND), urged the participants not to hesitate to send early warning signs as soon as possible to relevant organisations for early response.

He emphasised the need to also verify such information before sending them out. Aov also stressed the need for participants to acquire basic issues in communicating early signal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the participants were exposed to the differences between conflicts and violence and dynamics of conflicts.

They were also educated on monitoring and evaluation of early warning and early response as well as the importance of gathering data for early warning and early response.

The State Peace Architecture is drawn from the relevant ministries of the state government, civil society organisations, security agencies, traditional rulers, community heads, among others. (NAN)
