NGO wants family bonding, harmony, to check domestic violence

PASTOR Chioma Ndeobi, Founder and President, Progressive Women of Goodwill (PWGW), an NGO, on Wednesday stressed the need for family bonding and harmony, to check domestic violence and divorce among couples.
Ndeobi gave the admonition at the organisation’s quarterly family reform and counselling workshop, held at ikeja, Lagos, to rekindle peace and reunite broken homes.
The Founder, whose NGO is inclined to peace in the family, said couples should show love to one another and avoid suspicious living, to check domestic violence in the family unit.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured praises and worship in thanksgiving to God and reunited three about-to-break marriages that had earlier passed through the routine counselling.
Ndeobi described the family unit as the nucleus of the society, which, therefore, should be in good stead to fulfill its obligations to children that God had blessed the home with.
She decried the spike in divorce in the society, advising couples, especially young ones, to study the likes and dislikes of their spouses and work toward upholding sound principles that must not be toyed with.
According to her, God created the institution of marriage for societal sustainability and never envisaged crisis for it.
“PWGW is created to tackle root causes of family breakage, marital violence and to bring succor to matured singles that are unloved by society and families.
“We employ practical steps in restoring family values and to see that divorce cases are reduced.
“The way we are trying to curb domestic violence is to have a role model.
“We decided to first of all honour those men that have stood with their wives in spite of the women’s short comings and somehow bad characters.
“They are still there for their wives, they didn’t throw them away or divorce them, or abuse them physically or emotionally,
“It means that they have tolerance, which is key to harmony in the family. When we honour these men, other younger men can emulate them,” she said.
The gospel preacher urged troubled homes to approach the NGO or others working for family harmony early for reform and re-institution of bonds before crisis escalates. (NAN)
