NHRC receives 106 complaints on human rights in Kano

THE National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it received 106 complaints bordering on human rights abuses in November in Kano State.
Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, the state NHRC Coordinator, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kano.
He said that 81 of the 106 cases had been treated, while 25 were still pending.
Abdullahi said that 42 out of the cases bordered on women and gender matters, while 25 had to do with family abandonment.
He said that the remaining 19 were on rights of children which included education, health and welfare.
“Fifteen of the cases received in the period under review are issues of labour matters and entitlement of workers.
“The remaining five cases are on abuse of right which include civil and political rights among others.
“At international level, the United Nations has set aside 16 days of activism, from Nov.25- Dec.10 every year to eliminate, minimize violence of women and girls in our society.
“Women and girls are more prone and vulnerable to violence in the society,” he said.
Abdullahi said that NHRC would collaborate with stakeholders to eliminate sexual and gender base violence against women and girls.
He added that NHRC was working on plans to pay advocacy visit to policy makers, detention facilities, secondary and tertiary institution to promote rights of women and girls.
Abdullahi said that the stakeholders included state executives, legislatures, judiciary and police.(NAN)
