Nigeria and the challenge of Christmas
Opinion
By Valentine Obienyem
TRUE patriots in today’s Nigeria are angry patriots. A good example is Rev. Fr. Dr. George Ehusani. He made my day after I listened to his Christmas reflection. My only request is for its transcription and publication in newspapers and on other platforms.
Fr. Ehusani spoke to Nigerians in a language that came from a bleeding heart – the heart of all true Nigerian patriots must be bleeding from the intensity of vices in the country today. Like the prophets of old, he also sounded a warning to Nigerians that time is of the essence. If we do not take heed, the consequences could be dire.
What else can I say about the reflection? It is unnecessary to pass judgment on it, and I advise you to listen to him yourself. However, as far as we know, has anyone ever constructed such an impressive discourse about Nigeria that challenges the evil status quo? He touched on all aspects of what is making the country unbearable: those in government, private businesses, internet sensationalism that damages reputations for profit, corruption, and pastor-impostors feeding poison to those seeking bread.
By the time you finish listening to him, you cannot help but marvel at the fertility of his ideas and the depth of his insight. The degenerative looseness of Nigerian morals and politics, he believes, can only be cured by decisive action and positive disposition of Nigerians to virtues.
Fr. Ehusani calls on Christians to seize the opportunity presented by Christmas to emulate the civilizing influence of Christianity by living more refined lives in contrast to the current disorder of our times.
After listening to Ehusani’s reflection, I encourage Nigerians to speak up frankly about the country. The time for silence is over. Indeed, when Nigeria is finally cleansed, the heroes will not be sycophants like Uncle Joe or Reno, but real men who spoke about the country as it is and offered solutions.
These men are not mere theorists. Like Ehusani, we see them today speaking up, denouncing the ills in the country, and actively applying their wisdom in seeking solutions. This is why I often repost the admonitions of Bishop Godfrey Onah of Nsukka and all men of goodwill.
