Nigeria has appealed for international support towards its re-election into the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council.

ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies.

Amb Audu Kadiri, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva stated in continuation of the events lined up to commemorate the nation’s 58th Independence Anniversary.

Kadiri, who expressed the nation’s commitment to multilateralism, said that Nigeria had served meritoriously in the UN Security Council and other governing bodies and would continue to do so.

“It is for this reason that Nigeria is seeking your valued support for its re-election into the council of the ITU,’’ Kadiri said.

The envoy also sought support for Nigeria’s candidate, Mr William Ijeh, as the Director of Telecommunication Development Bureau at ITU Plenipotentiary Conference slated to hold from Oct. 29 to Nov. 16 in Dubai, United Arab Emirate.

Speaking on Nigeria’s journey to nationhood, the envoy gave a brief history of the nation’s amalgamation and the ancient African civilisation, cultural and commercial exchanges that existed before colonialism.

He also expressed the nation’s commitment to its foreign policy, which centres on the promotion of peace and security on the continent and the facilitation of socio-economic development of the continent.

NAN reports that the ITU Council has 48 member nations while Africa, which is grouped under Region D, has 13 seats. (NAN)
