A new directive from the federal government of Nigeria stops top government functionaries in ministries, parastatals and agencies from flying first class while on official trips
The Federal Government has banned all top government officials from flying first class while on officials trips as government revenue continues to decline due to dwindling price of crude oil.
Festus Akanbi, media adviser to the finance minister, in a statement on Wednesday, April 6, in Abuja, said the decision was part of the effort by the government to reduce the amount being spent on overheard expenditure.
All top officials of government such as ministers, permanent secretaries, chairmen of federal government committees, as well as chairmen and chief executives of parastatals and agencies are to travel on business class, the statement said.
Prior to this new directive, some government officials who should have been on business class usually travelled on first class, while many others travelled business class instead of economy class.
This new directive is contained in a circular on review of overhead expenses released by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation. It came on the heels of the recommendations by the Efficiency Unit set up by Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, last year to prune down government overhead expenses and .engender transparency.
