THE Nigeria Internet Registration Association, NiRA, has said that the country recorded a total of 6,797 domain name registrations as at the end of March 2017.

NiRA, the body managing the country’s domain name registration, said the figure, which is more than the March 2016 registrations of 4,129, has been regarded as a remarkable improvement.

Sunday Folayan, president, NiRA, said the March 2017 total registration is more than the total February 2017 registration of 5,254. This trend, he said shows the improvement in the number of domain registrations. “Of course the economic situation in 2016 was quite different from the economic climate in 2017. Nigerians have re-strategized in their plans for promoting their online business and hence there is improvement in the domain name count.”

The current figure brings the total number of domain name registration in the country to over 100,000. Nigeria’s .ng domain name registration moved up slightly by 3,236 in September last year, and by additional 3,483 registrations in October last year bringing the total number of registered domain names in the country to 77, 776 as at October 2016, according to the statistics released by NiRA.

Although few registrations were recorded in November and December last year, the country in January this year, recorded 15,000 domain name registration, while it recorded 5,254 in February this year and 6,797 in March this year, bringing the total number of domain name registration in the country as at March this year, to a little above 100,000.

As at July 2016, the total number of .ng domain names registered in the country in the last 10 years, was 68,050, but with the additional registrations by the registrars in the months of August, September and October last year, the figure rose to 77,776 .ng domain registrations as at October 2016. The number however further increased by additional 23,000 in the months of January, February and March this year, bringing the total number a little above 100,000 domain name registrations so far.

In technical parlance, domain name which could be country code Top Level Domain name, ccTLD, or generic top level domain, gTLD, is the identity of individuals and organisations in cyberspace. For anyone to have access to internet activities the individual must register with a domain name that represents a country. For instance, Nigeria’s domain name in cyberspace must have the suffix .ng, Canada is .ca, South Africa is .za, United Kingdom .co.uk, among others.
