
Nigeria, UAE Sign Extradition Treaty

Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates, UAE, have signed six agreements including extradition treaty to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to United Arab Republic is yielding fruit. The two countries on Tuesday, January 19, signed six agreements that will be mutually beneficial. The signing of the agreements, which took place in Abu Dhabi centred on trade, finance and judicial matters. President Buhari and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates, witnessed the signing ceremony.
Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, and Obaid Attayar, UAE minister of state for financial affairs, signed the avoidance of double taxation agreement, while Okechukwu Enelamah, minister of trade and investment, signed the agreement on trade promotion and protection with the UAE minister of state for financial affairs.
Abubakar Malami, minister of justice, and his counterpart in the United Arab Emirates, Sultan Bin Saeed Albadi signed the judicial agreements on extradition, transfer of sentenced persons, mutual legal assistance on criminal matters, and mutual legal assistance on criminal and commercial matters, which includes the recovery and repatriation of stolen wealth.
Buhari, at the reception after the signing of the agreements, reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption and restoring Nigeria’s dignity in the comity of nations.
The President also urged all Islamic countries to support the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and denounce the atrocities of Boko Haram as un-Islamic and against the teachings of the Holy Prophet.
Responding, Zayed Al Nahyan, said that the relationship between Nigeria and the UAE would be strengthened by Buhari’s visit and the signing of the agreements.
