THE National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Centre, Office of the National security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA), retired Rear Adm. Yaminu Musa, says Nigeria has the capacity to defeat terrorism and other security challenges.
Musa gave the assurance while addressing PhD students of the Institute of Governance and Development Studies, Nasarawa State University, who were on study tour to the NCTC-ONSA.
In a statement by the Head, Strategic Communication, NCTC-ONSA, Mr Michael Abu, on Tuesday in Abuja, the coordinator said that Nigeria had continued to show capacity and commitment to addressing the security challenges.
“I have no doubt that Nigeria would surmount the challenges of terrorism and other forms of insecurity in the nearest future.
“Currently, the security situation in the North East and other parts of the country is gradually improving. I believe that our deliberations and proffered suggestions/way forward would further enhance our National security.
“The threat environment has always been dynamic and require consistent appraisals and espousal of proactive strategies to tackle envisaged challenges.
“The threat outlook would therefore demand multi-stakeholder collaboration across government and the citizenry in a well-coordinated whole of government and whole of society approaches to guarantee national security,’’ he said.
Musa enjoined Nigerians to be patriotic, adding that the challenges confronting the country would give way through concerted efforts of well-meaning citizens.
The NCTC boss urged members of the academia to contribute in revitalising security through research, education and policy engagement.
This, he added, would help to enhance policy and decision making at national and sub-national levels.
He said that institutions of higher learning also needed to sustain engagements with policymakers and security agencies to generate evidence-based recommendations for improving security in Nigeria.
Musa urged the doctoral students to focus on building the capacity of next generation of leaders and security professionals through courses and programmes in security studies, peace and conflict resolution.
According to him, by providing a solid understanding of security issues, the academia can build a skilled workforce capable of addressing security challenges effectively.
Earlier, the team leader, Prof. Andrew Zamani, said the interaction would help them to build on their knowledge of terrorism and security generally.
According to him, report from the tour would identify areas of further research and collaboration, and would be presented to the centre.(NAN)
