THE Nigerian Army has said that the Banex Plaza is temporarily shut down to ensure that the hoodlums, who have been using the Banex neighborhood as a sanctuary to pose security threat to the Federal Capital Territory are apprehended.

Major General, Onyema Nwachukwu, Director, Army Public Relations said in a statement on Tuesday that the closure of the plaza was in furtherance of the need for extensive investigation to be conducted at the scene to determine both the immediate and underlying cause of the mayhem, which occurred there at the weekend.

He noted that the investigation is aimed at ensuring the security of the Federal Capital Territory and to prevent such unwarranted attacks on military personnel and other security operatives, as has been observed in other areas, such as the unfortunate attack in Okuama.

Maj-Gen. Nwachukwu, who condemned the attack on the soldiers, who according to him, were unarmed and did not engage in any form of aggression, nor posed any threat to anyone, noted that the cruel treatment meted out to them was entirely unwarranted and unjustifiable.

He, however, promised that the Nigerian Army will ensure that it diligently investigates the circumstances surrounding the presence of the personnel at the plaza and the attack that ensued.

He also urged members of the public to exercise caution and restraint in dealing with military personnel and other security operatives, especially when they are in uniform and asked them to always use the established channels through which grievances or misconduct by personnel could be reported to the appropriate authorities, nothing that such acts of violence against personnel are not only condemnable, but could degenerate to the breakdown of law and order, orchestrating threats to national security.

“It is imperative that these channels are utilized to maintain order and respect for those who serve and protect our nation,” he added.

Recall that the recent unrest at Banex Plaza in Wuse, Abuja, on Saturday, May 18, 2024, was caused by yet to be identified hoodlums, who launched a brutal attack on some Nigerian Army personnel.
