TUKUR Buratai, chief of Army Staff, COAS, has said that the Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State, will begin in September. Already, army engineers have started construction work at the site
The COAS stated this shortly after receiving the Certificate of Occupancy and the surveyed master plan for the university site from Governor Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri on Monday, adding that the army had already reached out to the National Universities Commission, NUC, to secure approval for the university.
Expressing his appreciation to the Borno government for allocating the land, Burutai also said the funding for the university project was captured in the 2017 budget, commending the federal government for its commitment to start the institution.
The university is designed as a unique and specialised institution that will serve as solutions centre, especially to specific challenges facing the army and North East.
Responding, Governor Shettima assured of the states support to the institution, expressing confidence that when fully operational, the university will be a reference point for other universities in Africa. It will also create employment and add to the revenue base of the state.
