LATE preparation may work against Nigeria’s progress at the African Boxing Championship. Tony Konyegwachie, a Nigeria national boxing coach gave the hint while lamenting the late preparation of his wards towards next month’s African Boxing Championship in Cameroon. The game will serve as qualifiers for the Olympic Games.
The African Boxing Championship is expected to run from March 8 to 20, 2016.
Konyegwachie, who spoke to Completesportsnigeria.com, said that the country’s boxers were already behind schedule.
“We are fighting to go for Olympics qualifiers in Cameroon. We should have been in camp since and it’s very late now because the competition holds from March 8 to March 20. We are supposed to be at least two months in camp ahead of the competition.
“And another problem is that we don’t have facilities, so we have to manage with what we have. And like I said, it’s very late now, even though the boxers are expected to start coming to camp this weekend,” he said.
It is common knowledge that Nigerian boxers did not win any medal in the last four Olympics, they took part in Sydney 2000; Athens 2004; Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
The last time Nigeria won a medal at the Olympics was in Atlanta 1996, when Duncan Dokiware won a bronze.
