Jewel Olachi Nkwocha, 21, makes First Class Honours in Biomedical Engineering at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, United States of America
A 21-YEAR old Nigerian girl, Jewel Olachi Nkwocha has made her country proud by making hard-earned First Class Honours (Summa Cum Laude) in Biomedical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University, VCU, Richmond, United States of America.
Nkwocha, who hails from Imo State, also bagged a medal from the University’s Honours College as well as two awards from the School of Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering; all of which were presented to her at the University’s Graduation ceremonies held between May 8 and 9, in Richmond, USA.
Both Jewel and her parents, Jossy and Joy Nkwocha, were very happy and full of gratitude to God Almighty for such an academic feat in far-away USA, especially for a girl who did her secondary school in Nigeria (Federal Government College, Owerri), and travelled to USA only four years ago. In her four-year program, Jewel won twice the Mark Sternheimer honors scholarship as a reward for academic excellence.
In her 3rd year, she was given a Tutor appointment which, she said, was tasking but very rewarding intellectually. In her final year, Jewel was among 12 undergraduates who won the University’s Dean’s research grant for specialized project with a doctoral candidate.
Jewel was indeed an all-rounder, combining both social and academic work. In her second year, she vied and won election as Representative in the Students Union Association (SUA). In her third year, she moved higher, contested and also won a Senate seat in the SUA. She combined these responsibilities with being a UNICEF volunteer and one of the leaders of the African Students Union.
How does she feel making such a great result? “I just feel good, normal. I am happy that my result has elevated the image of my country Nigeria. I give thanks to my parents who gave me the opportunity of studying here in America. I also appreciate my guardians here in US, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Chijioke who have done so much for me. I give all the glory to God Almighty who has made it all possible.”
Jossy Nkwocha, who recently bagged a doctorate degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, former general editor of Newswatch magazine and a proud father of Jewel, commended her for making them proud, but also gave God the glory.
