NIGERIANS in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have embraced a novel tradition, known as “Healthy Holiday Feasts”, as families gathered to celebrate Christmas, blending delicious local dishes with mindful eating practices.
In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigerians in Abuja shared their commitment to incorporating nutrient-rich ingredients into traditional recipes.
Mrs Mary Adeyemi, a wise matriarch, mentioned introducing colourful fruits and vegetables alongside festive rice and stew, creating a balanced and nourishing meal.
Adeyemi said that her family actively shared recipes, fostering a collective effort towards healthier choices.
She conducted awareness campaigns, highlighting the importance of portion control and staying active during the holidays.
She also encouraged local fitness enthusiasts to organize family walks and outdoor activities, making physical exercise a joyful part of the celebrations.
“The ‘Healthy Holiday Feasts’ movement gained momentum, and soon, our neighbours joined us, making it easier for all of us to enjoy a healthy lifestyle during this period,” she said.
According to her, cooking classes and nutrition workshops became popular, fostering a shared responsibility at the gathering.
“The air is filled with the aroma of wholesome meals prepared with love and care. Our families savored their feasts, appreciating the fusion of tradition and health. This new approach not only brought joy to the celebrations but also contributed to a healthier and more vibrant community in Nigeria,” she added.
Amidst the joyful celebration, Mr Isa Ahmed, a respected elder in the Wasa area of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), addressed the gathering, speaking passionately about the cultural significance of traditional dishes and how integrating healthier choices could ensure the well-being of future generations.
He urged the gathering embrace the idea of a balanced celebration.
Amina Sulieman, a Nurse, underscored the long-term benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Sulieman provided practical tips on managing food portion sizes and encouraged regular health checks, fostering a sense of responsibility for personal well-being.
A group of energetic young adults, led by fitness enthusiast, Mr Tunde Kenneth, organized a holiday fitness challenge.
