PETER Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 general elections, has raised the alarm over the escalating harassment and intimidation of investigative journalists in Nigeria.
In a strongly worded statement, Obi condemned the detention and disappearance of journalists, citing the case of @PIDOMNIGERIA, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Obi emphasized the crucial role of a free press in holding those in power accountable, warning that Nigeria risks degenerating into a “Banana Republic” if such attacks on press freedom continue.
He demanded justice, accountability and an end to these egregious violations.
“The fundamental right to free speech is inextricably linked to access to information about government activities,” Obi said, stressing the urgent need for the Freedom of Information Bill.
Obi’s statement comes amidst growing concerns over Nigeria’s deteriorating press freedom record. The international community and local rights groups have expressed alarm over the increasing cases of harassment, abduction, and detention of journalists.
Obi’s call to action seeks an open society where citizens can express themselves freely, access unclassified information, and hold the government accountable. His statement has sparked widespread outrage and solidarity with the embattled Nigerian press corps.
The Nigerian authorities have yet to respond to Obi’s demands or provide information on the whereabouts of the detained journalist. The situation remains a pressing concern for democracy and human rights in Nigeria.
