PROF. Olukunle Iyanda, President, Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), on Friday called for the re-engineering of leadership for national transformation.
Iyanda told newsmen in Lagos that the call became necessary to aid citizens in choosing the leadership who were regenerated with the right ethical values and principles in discharging their duties.
He urged the country’s leadership to undergo a re-engineering process, including restructuring, review of policies and review of their total operational model with a way to optimise the objectives for which they were elected as leaders.
In addition, he advised citizens to cheer-on the leadership who strived toward the benefits, consideration and well-being of its people and call to account those who had failed to be accountable in their various fields of responsibility.
“Re-election is the most current issue in the country now.
“The kind of leadership we elect right now will go a long way in determining the well-being of the nation and its people.
“We need to look inward and pick people with ethical values and adherence to laid down principles on which the deliverance of their manifesto is hinged.
“The leaders needs to be restructured toward the benefits, consideration and interest of its people.
“We have served the leaders who were elected to serve us for too long due to citizens seeing leaders as tin-gods,” he said.
To achieve the aim of national transformation, he also advised the populace to be properly educated which, he referred to as, the strongest and most effective agent of transformation.
“The proper education and sensitisation of a person to know his rights will enable him to take decisions on his own based on core ethical values rather than sentiments or instant gratification.
“The leaders also need to be properly educated on how to deliver,” he said.
The NIM president called for the implementation of sanctions on persons in leadership positions found wanting (of corrupt practices and other character deficiencies) in the the discharge of their duties.
“I believe the country has good policies and laws. The problem however, is in its implementation.
“Until we have people who will stick to the law, fight it out, and make scapegoat of erring persons, nothing will get better,” he said.
Iyanda said that a lack of philosophy and value by some leaders had led to political party members migration from one to another.
He advised citizens to in choosing leadership, search for distinguishing manifestos of persons of integrity who were ready to deliver.
“If you hold certain principles and values dearly, it will be very difficult to allow persons of contrasting values dwell within your abode,” he said.
He proposed a reduction of the unnecessary tension in the political environment in the nation to restore investors confidence (local and international) between now and after the 2019 general elections.
“When you are investing, you are committing to an environment you do not know and cannot predict.
“If you cannot predict the state of your business and its outcome tomorrow, you will not be encouraged to invest today.
“This still boils down to leadership as I have earlier said, and the principal mix for economic development is resources, skill and leadership.
“All we need is a leader who can mix resources and skill to create an enabling environment for business and people to thrive and grow,” he said.
The NIM chief restated the institute’s commitment to sensitising the populace on management leadership, saying that it planned to achieve the aim at its forthcoming annual national management conference scheduled to hold from Sept 16 to Sept. 19 in Kano.
The conference has the theme: “Re-engineering Leadership for National Transformation”. (NAN)
