THE Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), FCT Chapter, on Tuesday inaugurated a new set of Young Doctors Forum (YDF) committee to mentor and guide upcoming young doctors.

Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, Chairman of the association, while inaugurating the 15-member committee in Abuja, urged them to be up and doing in their new task.

He also urged them to promote the welfare and aspirations of the young doctors.

Ugwuanyi said the work of the committee would start from mobilising the doctors from medical school, especially the final year students.

He said that the committee would also mobilise the young doctors from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) up to their place of primary assignment.

Ugwuanyi said that a programme would be designed to increase the skills of the young doctors to make them more employable in the medical industry.

He said NMA would also be engaging the committee on medical research, adding that the committee would help the NMA with data collection in Abuja.

“You have access to database, it is important for us to know maternal mortality from the PPA, in University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, get us the data that is necessary on monthly basis,” he said.

He said that measures would be designed to reduce the issue of brain drain confronting the medical industry.

“The job assigned to you requires you to be administering people that maybe older than you but you need to understand that in leadership age don’t really matter.

Ugwuanyi expressed the trust and confidence in the committee, adding that they were conversant with the task assigned to them because they have firsthand experience.

He said that NMA-FCT have consulted widely before the young doctors were selected to be part of the committee.

The chairman said that the representation of each of them cuts across all hospitals in the FCT except the private ones.

He said that more than 60 to 70 per cent of young doctors in Abuja are in the public hospitals.

In her acceptance speech, Chairman of YDF, Dr Motajo Modupeoluwa, thanked the association for the opportunity given to them to serve.

“We shall build on the successes of the past executives as well as give psychological support to all the young doctors,“he said. (NAN)
