DR Kefas Zawaya, a presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has pledged to run an inclusive government if elected at the association’s election on May 5.

Zawaya stated this in Abuja during an interactive session with the FCT members of the association (NMA-FCT).

He urged members nationwide to be united in their various chapters if the incoming National Executive Council (NEC) must achieve some of the desires of the association.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zawaya was one of the past Chairmen of Gombe Chapter of the association though he hails from Adamawa.

NAN also reports that the 2024 general election is slated for the Annual Delegates Meeting/Annual General Meeting in Calabar between May 5 and May 12.

NAN reports that the NMA Presidency has been zoned to the northeast and that the AGM will end the tenure of Dr Uche Ojinmah who came in as the National President in 2022.

Meanwhile, the aspirant stated that he had participated in so many struggles for NMA, both at the federal and state levels, while promising to interface with government for a meaningful dialogue.

“I came in as the Secretary-General of the association between 2012-2014 when NMA needed to have a new salary scheme during Dr Osahon Enabulele Presidency. I think I am the most competent among aspirants.

“I participated in the struggle for upward review of NMA salary in the past; we must be united if we must address other challenges confronting us; we must be united for us to achieve our aim in the struggle for our right.

” One quarter of my NEC will be young men, one quarter will be women, we will seat with other affiliate members of the association, there is need for upward review of many allowances for doctors.

“We will run things in a way it will sweet all members. There is need for NMA constitution to be reviewed, we need to review our voting pattern,” he said.

He pledged to look at issues that would generate money for NMA, while urging members to renew their practising licences, stressing that anyone who failed to renew the expired licence would be categorised as quack doctor which the NEC was ready to tackle.

Zawaya also promised to uphold the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of NMA and live up to its responsibility.

Prof Bala Audu, another presidential aspirant, who is the Vice Chancellor , Federal University of Health Science, Azare, Bauchi state, equally gave his manifestos, stating he was the best candidate for the job.

He said he had traversed so many states in Nigeria, rendering services in the medical profession.

“I was part and percel of the committee who worked for the success of Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

” I have been in the northern caucus of the NMA, zonal caucus, we need a strong team to bring about all the desire we want in the NMA. My team and I are ready to work with all members.

“We need a team that can package all what we want, we need a team that will bring improvement on the quality of healthcare Nigerians desired.

“We have enough evidence to convince government to increase our bandwidth; we are ready to take up the excessive workload and introduce a new allowance,” he said.

He added that there was need to mitigate the causes of Japa syndrome in the medical profession.

Audu also pledged to have rapport with government to increase the residency training of doctors all over Nigeria (NAN)
