THE Anambra State Government says no deaths were recorded over botched free medical outreach mission planned by the Nigerian Army.

“Indeed, the exercise has yet to take off, when rumours of vaccines from mischief makers went viral, sending panic to communities in Ozubulu and Nnewi, with many withdrawing their children and wards from schools.

“No pupil was vaccinated let alone died as a result,’’ Ogbuefi Tony Nnachetta, commissioner for Information and Communications Strategy said in Awka on Wednesday.

He explained that the snag in exercise was that the Anambra State government, particularly, the Ministries of Health and Education were not carried along and could not have anticipated how misinformation crept into the exercise.

However, following panic generated by the exercise, Willie Obiano, Anambra State Governor, has enjoined the Army to suspend the exercise.

The Government has since appealed to the general public to stop withdrawing their children and wards from schools as the situation was being handled.

Reports from Anambra State Information officers in the area said that the exercise had yet to commence, when rumours went out that the soldiers were out to inject people with Monkey Pox, ostensibly to spread the disease.

“This is a product of unfounded rumour by unscrupulous elements to send panic and unsettle the calm environment in Anambra.”
