The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Yobe, on Thursday, warned residents against the stigmatisation of COVID-19 survivors.

NOA’s Director in the state, Alhaji Ali Audu, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu.

He said stigmatisation of COVID-19 survivors, if not properly checked, would undermine the state and Federal Government’s efforts at tackling the pandemic.

“ The increasing rate of stigmatisation of COVID-19 survivors in Yobe has become a matter of great concern to NOA and other well-meaning citizens of the state.

“ It has now reached a stage where people don’t even want to observe congregational prayers together with those that fully recovered from the disease.

“ Look, the survivors are also being nicknamed “ corona,” Audu said.

The director said they had embarked on massive sensitisation campaign across the 17 Local Government Areas on the dangers of stigmatising COVID-19 survivors.

Audu noted that failure to resolve the issue would discourage suspects from seeking for help in the hospital.

He also cautioned residents against rejecting polio vaccines, saying the act could undermine successes recorded against the disease.

The director called on the general public to avoid dumping refuse in drains to prevent flooding. (NAN)
