THE Director General of National Population Commission (NPopC), Dr Ghaji Bello, has urged Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to provide public conveniences and resting places on highways.
Bello gave the advice when the FRSC Sector Commander of FCT Command, Corps Commander Wobin Gora, paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday in Abuja.
He urged FRSC to liaise with the Federal Ministry of Works and other relevant agencies to provide toilets, restaurants and relaxation centres on highways.
He said that such measures, when put in place, would help to ease some problems faced by road users.
The director general said that it would be appropriate to have those facilities in place on the roads at least every 100 or 200 kilometer intervals as seen in developed countries.
The NPopC boss added that “I commend officers of FRSC on the job they are doing toward reducing
road accidents in the country and for having distress call numbers which people could call when in danger.
“NPopC is ready to train FRSC staff on statistics, research demography, among others, whenever they are ready.
“The mandate of FRSC and NPopC are related. NPopC has a critical mass of experts in the area of demography, cartography, research and statistics and we urge FRSC to approach us for technical support whenever they have survey to carry out.”
He appealed to the safety corps to send surveillance team around the commission to check car theft.
Gora, who said that the FRSC would welcome any collaboration from NPopC, added that good road safety was not a one man task and urged everyone to be part of it to help maintain sanity on the roads.
He encouraged the public to comply with traffic rules, saying that having a speed limiting device in the car would check the movement of vehicles on the roads, as well as curb accidents.
He also urged NPopC to invite FRSC in their activities so as to sensitise people on good road use.
The commander stressed the need for motorists to be physically captured before being issued drivers licence, stressing that involving third party in acquiring licence could lead to issuance of fake document.
He encouraged the public to use the 122 toll free line to report accidents and other emergencies on the roads.
Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of the Road Book Highway Codes and Federal National Drivers Licence form/Physical Characteristics to the NPopc director general. (NAN)
