THE FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested five suspected illegal miners and four others for vandalism of public properties in the territory.
The NSCDC FCT Commandant, Mr Olusola Odumosu, said on Wednesday in Abuja that the five suspected miners were nabbed at Katampe Extension in the FCT.
He said that the suspects, aged between 18 and 43, were arrested by the Mines and Steel Development unit of the command following credible intelligence report.
Odumosu claimed that they were engaged in illegal mining activities that led to the destruction of transmission cables, transformers and degradation of the area of activity.
The commandant added that five cartons of tiles and a bottle of used explosive were found in the custody of the suspects.
“We have commenced thorough investigations to unravel their level of involvement in the offences they are being charged for.
“Be rest assured that those found culpable would be prosecuted and if otherwise, be set free after due diligence is observed and in accordance with the extant laws.”
According to him, during the raid, some other suspects bolted on sighting personnel of the corps.
He assured that the command would intensify surveillance and reinforcement of personnel to address the menace of miscreants and other criminals in the FCT.
The commandant, who said they would continue to collaborate with other security agencies to make the FCT secure, solicited for consistent information and actionable intelligence from the general public.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding critical assets and infrastructure, and combating saboteurs. (NAN)
